The Skybridge [ ˈskaɪˌbɹɪdʒ ] ( Sky Bridge ) is a cable-stayed bridge built in 1989 in the Metro Vancouver region in the southwest of the Canadian province of British Columbia . It spans the Fraser River and connects New Westminster with Surrey .
The bridge is not used for automobile traffic , but carries two tracks of the SkyTrain public transport system operated by Translink and is used by the Expo Line . A (unconnected) third track in the middle of the bridge is used by maintenance workers to move the equipment back and forth.
The two bridge towers are 123 m high, the tracks are 45 m above the river. With a mean span of 340 m and a total length of 616 m, the skybridge is the longest bridge in the world that is intended exclusively for public transport.
