Skyper

Skyper was an alphanumeric pager service operated in Germany from 1996 to 2013 . The pager required for this , with which one could use this service, is named after him .

history

At CeBIT Home 1996, T-Mobile presented the T-Skyper. Operations began on October 10, 1996 . This pager network supplemented the existing Cityruf and Scall services . Like the other two services, the Skyper service was taken over by the provider e * Message . The devices were renamed e * Skyper and continued to be sold under this name until 2013.

In the summer of 2013, e * Message announced to its customers by invoice that they would discontinue the e * skyper service on December 31, 2013. The time signal could then be received with the Skyper for a short time until the network was completely switched off and dismantled.

costs

The price was depending on the type of access between 0.49 euros and 1.23 euros for the delivery of a message that could include technical reasons, a maximum of 80 characters.

Technical details

In contrast to the original Scall, Skyper was an alphanumeric pager that could receive not only digits but also text messages. Compared to Cityruf, you could also receive various information programs that covered different areas such as weather , headlines , politics , business , the stock market , sports , entertainment and culture . For the reception of these programs, which were called InfoNews, the user incurred regular costs in the form of a basic fee. The receipt of FriendlyNews, i.e. personal messages, was free of charge for the recipient of the message. Skyper was thus a CPP system despite the basic fee for the InfoNews, that is, the sender of a radio call alone bore the costs.

Finally, there were six different options to choose from for sending personal messages:

  • alphanumeric messages via an operator after dialing into a call center
  • numeric messages through a voice computer
  • alphanumeric messages via PC with modem and special software
  • alphanumeric messages via SMS
  • alphanumeric messages via a WWW input form (free of charge for the sender, but limited in the number of messages)
  • alphanumeric messages via email

The protocol of the services was developed by POCSAG . The signal was transmitted on a carrier frequency of 465.970 MHz.

Further use

Some Skyper are now being converted by radio amateurs to 439.9875 MHz dep1( 70 centimeter band ), where radio messages are sent out as part of the amateur radio . The transmitters for this were set up by radio amateurs and are available in larger cities such as B. in Berlin, Augsburg, Nuremberg, Cologne, Lahr / Schw. etc. available for free.
