Slavery Footprint ( Engl. Slavery footprint ) is an Internet self-test based on slavery -like production conditions, child and forced labor in the international consumer goods sector to draw attention.

Process and background

Based on the question: "How many slaves work for you?", Users can enter selected data about their consumption habits in 11 steps . The website then outputs a graphically designed "footprint" which - based on the ecological footprint - is intended to illustrate the personal contribution to modern slavery .

The website's authors looked at the supply chains of 400 high-demand consumer goods to determine the likely number of “slaves” involved in making each of these products.

After completing the survey, users are asked to share the results on social networks or to take measures to reduce the number of "slaves". The project aims to raise awareness of forced labor and child labor and encourage the public to advocate strategic market measures to curb forced labor.

history

Musician and activist Justin Dillon, founder and CEO of Made In A Free World, launched Slavery Footprint on September 22, 2011 with support from the US State Department as part of the Clinton Global Initiative . The day marked the 149th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation .

In its launch year 2011, Slavery Footprint received numerous awards, including Cannes , SXSW , Clio and Awwwards, and received considerable coverage in the US media. The following year, the site received the Guardian Award for “Digital Innovation 2012” in the “Technology for Social Change” category. The website shows above-average user loyalty (retention) with an average dwell time of 8.5 minutes.
