The Slawobulgarische story is an early handwritten work from 1762, which describes the history of Bulgaria. It is considered to be the beginning of Bulgarian historiography in the context of the Enlightenment .

Composition and meaning of the work

The work was handwritten from 1760 to 1762 by the Athos monk Paissi (also Paisij) in the Chilendar monastery and completed on June 19, 1762 in the Sographos monastery . He was referring to older church sources that he found in the monastery library.

With this he created the first national history of Bulgaria, which was based on a medieval conception of history, but moved Bulgaria's nation into focus and tied it closer to the rest of Europe to the west.

To be sure, Bulgarian history was mentioned in passing by many Bulgarian authors as early as the 1760s, but it was never the sole subject of a separate study and treatise prior to the completion of Slavo- Bulgarian history .

In today's research, Slavo- Bulgarian history marks the beginning of the Bulgarian rebirth , although the chances of this revival are evident even after the Peace of Karlowitz and the end of the management of the Köprülü vizier .

Similar works

At the end of 2017, the long-sought manuscript of an earlier ecclesiastical history of Bulgarian countries and the Bulgarian people from 1666 was discovered in the Modena library, which, however, remains isolated outside the context of the historical process in Bulgarian countries. Of course, Bulgarian history was mentioned in passing by many Bulgarian authors as early as the 1760s, but it has never been the only subject of a separate study and treatise.

In 1761 another Bulgarian story by an author came out of Transylvania .
