Sleepy Jeffers

George "Sleepy" Jeffers (born February 15, 1922 , † November 25, 1992 ) was an American country and rockabilly musician .

Life

Sleepy Jeffers started his career at the age of ten on December 25, 1932. In 1940 Jeffers joined the WWVA Jamborees in Wheeling , West Virginia, along with his father and brother . Later he was also heard in the WMMN Sagebrush Roundup . During his time with the Sagebrush Roundup, he was drafted into the US Marines , from which he was released three years later.

After completing his military service, Jeffers began working as a disc jockey on the WTIP radio station in Charleston , West Virginia . In 1951 he had his own radio show on KTBV in Shreveport , Louisiana , which aired in the morning. He was also part of the Davis Twins show, who hosted a show at six in the morning and eleven in the morning. With the Davis Twins, Jeffers recorded the single Pretending Is A Game / My Blackbirds Are Bluebirds Now on Starday in 1957 . Around 1959 he worked again as a DJ on WTIP.

In the 1960s Jeffers hosted the children's television show Popcorn Theater , in which he appeared as Little Willie . From this show Jeffers developed the character Uncle Willie and the Uncle Willie Show on WCHS-TV in Charleston in the mid-1960s . The Davis Twins appeared again in this show. The show's band consisted of Lewis Collins (guitar), Roscoe Swerps (steel guitar) and Mark Wolford (drums). The show was canceled in the 1970s.

Sleepy Jeffers died in 1992.
