Sligo Abbey

The Abbey of Sligo ( Irish Mainistir Shligigh , English Sligo Abbey ) in the north-west of the Republic of Ireland was built in 1253 by order of Maurice Fitzgerald, the Baron of Offaly and founder of Sligo . In 1414 it was destroyed by fire and in 1595 it was devastated during the War of Tyrone (now Northern Ireland). It was destroyed again during the Ulster uprising . The monks left the abbey in the 18th century; Lord Palmerston restored them in the 1850s.

Cloister of the abbey

Nowadays it is open to the public. The ruins of the abbey show an abundance of sculptures. Gothic and Renaissance tombstones are on display, as is a well-preserved cloister. The highlight is the sculpted high altar from the 15th century, the only one that still exists in Ireland from this era.
