Slinningbua is a Grade I listed building in the Norwegian city of Ålesund .

location

It is located in a prominent position on the easternmost point of the island of Heissa in the Slinningen district and is considered a landmark of the city.

Architecture and history

The four-storey white wooden building was built for the fishing industry in 1916. It is covered by a gable roof . Large quantities of fish were handled and herring salted in the house. During the German occupation of Norway during World War II , the German military monitored both ship and air traffic from the house. After the war it was used again for fish handling, even after a new owner took over the building in 1954. After the end of the economic use, the building fell into disrepair and there were plans to demolish the house, against which resistance formed. In May 2011 the Ålesund City Council decided not to keep it. However, the Riksantikvar Jørn Holme campaigned for the preservation of the building. It was then placed under monument protection around 2012. The building is an example of a maritime construction, as it was typical for the Norwegian coast, but has often not been preserved.

Renovation work took place in 2017.
