Heissa , also known as Hessa , is an island in the municipality of Ålesund in the Norwegian province of Møre og Romsdal .
It is the westernmost of the four islands on which the city of Ålesund extends and has an area of 3.6 km². To the east of Heissa, only separated by the narrow Steinvågsundet , is the island of Aspøy . There is a road connection with it at the northeast tip via a bridge. North of the island is the Valderhaugfjord , south of the Heissafjord . The appearance of the island is shaped by the mountain Sukkertoppen in the southwest of the island , which at 314 meters is also the highest point on Heissa. In the north there is another elevation with the 107-meter-high Olsfjellet . In the west-east direction, the island has a length of about 4.5 kilometers with a maximum width of about 2.0 kilometers. The eastern part of Heissa juts out to the east as a narrow peninsula and is located south of Aspøy. The greater distance from Aspøy here leads to a protected harbor for Ålesund.
Heissa is built on especially in its eastern parts. In the east of the island is Slinningen , on the easternmost point there is the listed house Slinningbua , which originally served the fishing industry . To the east is the small island of Slinningsholmen . In the northeast is Skarbøvik . There are also businesses and, above all, fish processing . Skarbøvik Church is located in the village . A total of 4,040 people (as of 2015) live on the island. The Atlantic Park Aquarium is on the west side of the island . Before Heissa there is the small island Snegleværet .
