Slot canyon

Slot Canyon is the American name for a narrow gorge created by flowing water .

Slot canyons are a typical landscape feature of the Colorado Plateau in the southwestern United States . Easily erodible layers of sandstone and the dry climate favor the formation of the canyons. Characteristic are flash floods (ger .: flash floods ), according to mostly short summer storms flowing large amounts of water in a short time through the otherwise dry ravine.

Examples of well-known, easily accessible slot canyons are Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon near Page in the state of Arizona , and the Zion Narrows in Utah . The gorges of the Colorado Plateau have gained increasing importance for tourism in recent years and are very popular with photographers. A German equivalent for the term slot canyon is the gorge .
