The Smith Rocks are a group of small rock islands off the Mawson coast of the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Land . In the eastern part of Holme Bay they are 800 m northeast of the Canopus Islands .
Norwegian cartographers mapped it using aerial photographs of the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 and named it Spjotøyholmane . The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia , on the other hand, named them after Victor C. Y. Smith of the Royal Australian Army Service Corps , driver of a DUKW amphibious vehicle during operations to change staff at Davis and Mawson stations in two Antarctic summer campaigns between 1958 and 1960.
