Participants in the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE, 1929–1931), led by the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson , sighted the coast for the first time. Between 1930 and 1931, after landings, they also explored the adjoining stretch of coast between Cape Bruce at 67 ° 25 'east longitude and the Scullin Monolith at 67 ° 47' east longitude. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) named the coast after Douglas Mawson in recognition of his significant contributions to Antarctic research.
