Willem Hendrik van den Berge (born February 19, 1905 in Tholen , province of Zeeland , † February 19, 1987 in Leidschendam , province of South Holland ) was a Dutch ministerial official and politician , who between 1953 and 1956 was State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance in the second Drees cabinet and again from 1959 to 1965 State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance in the De Quay and Marijnen cabinets .

Life

After attending the Rijks Hogere Burgerschool in Goes in June 1922, Van den Berge, son of a PTT officer, began training as a tax officer, which he completed in October 1925 with the first exam in the areas of direct taxes, customs duties and consumption taxes. After working as a tax officer, he was Deputy Tax Inspector in the Ministry of Finance from 1928 to 1931 and as such was temporarily entrusted with the management of the tax authorities in Hansweert in 1929 . In the following period he was tax inspector in the Ministry of Finance between 1931 and 1941 and during this time he studied law in the Netherlands with a focus on tax law at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden until 9 September 1939 . After he was tax director from 1944 to 1945, he acted between 1945 and January 1, 1950 as acting director general for taxes in the Ministry of Finance with the title Raadadviseur . On April 8, 1949, he completed his doctorate in law at the Gemeentelijke Universiteit Amsterdam with the dissertation Beginselen van de hilftingheffing , in which he dealt with principles of taxation. On January 1, 1950, he became Director General for Fiscal Affairs in the Ministry of Finance and held this post until February 1, 1953. In July 1950, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

Prime Minister Willem Drees then appointed van den Berge for the first time on February 2, 1953 as State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance (Staatssecretaris van Financiën) in its second cabinet , where he was responsible for fiscal matters until October 13, 1956. He then held the office of government commissioner for taxes between November 5, 1956 and May 27, 1959. For his services he was appointed commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau on November 21, 1956 .

On May 27, 1959, he again took over the post of State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jan de Quay . He held this office from July 24, 1963 to April 14, 1965 in the subsequent cabinet of Prime Minister Victor Marijnen . On May 24, 1965, van den Berge was finally appointed a member of the Raad van State , a constitutional body advising the government, and was a member of it until March 1, 1980. He was appointed Grand Officer of the House Order of Orange in July 1966 . In February 1980 he also became commander of the Order of the Dutch Lions.
