The Scullin Monolith is a crescent-shaped rock formation on the Mawson Coast of the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Land . It is 6 km west of Torlyn Mountain . In front of it is Douglas Bay .
The Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson landed here in an airplane on February 13, 1931 as part of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition . Mawson named the formation after James Scullin (1876-1953), from 1929 to 1931 Prime Minister of Australia . The rock has been mapped from January to February 1931 and by Norwegian whalers took him to Klarius Mikkelsen (* 1887), captain of the whaling ship Torlyn as Klarius Mikkelsenfjell named. This name was retained in the form of Mikkelsen Peak , the highest point on the rock formation.
