Smithson is a small, bowl-shaped impact crater on the eastern edge of the front of the moon near the northeastern edge in the plain of the Mare Fecunditatis , southwest of the crater Apollonius .
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1976 after the British mineralogist and chemist James Smithson . Previously, he was as taruntius N designated.
