Smokin 'Guns (SG for short) is a free first person shooter that recreates the atmosphere of Western films (especially from the spaghetti western genre ). The game was originally developed as a modification for Quake III Arena under the name Western Quake 3 .

history

Western Quake 3 was developed by Iron Claw Interactive between 2001 and 2005. During this time there were two main releases of the game (1.0beta and 2.0beta) which were executable as a modification or total conversion of Quake3. After the release of version 2.0beta in 2003, the further development of Western Quake 3 by Iron Claw Interactive was not continued. At the beginning of 2005, the development was taken over by a new team with the consent and support of Iron Claw Interactive, which initially further developed the game under the same name. Further releases (2.1beta from 2005 and 2.2beta 2006) of Western Quake 3 by the new team followed. In January 2009, the game was released under the name Smokin 'Guns by the new team, which operates under the name Smokin' Guns Productions , as an independently executable version (standalone mod). The renaming was done to prevent legal problems with the use of the name Quake. He also reflects on the development of the new team since 2005.

Game world and game mechanics

In contrast to Quake, there are no items to pick up in SG, as the gameplay should be as realistic as possible reminiscent of the "Wild West". To get to weapons, the player has to open the "Buy menu" and buy weapons or other items, such as dynamite, which cost different amounts in each case. You can get money through various actions in the game, for example if you kill someone or by collecting money that is scattered all over the cards.

Life points

In contrast to the Quake III Arena template, there is no way in Smokin 'Guns to recharge one's life points, neither through items that can be collected, nor through loading stations or the like. In addition, the player loses life points if, after jumping from too high a height, hits the ground.

Game modes

In Smokin 'Guns there are several game modes that are reminiscent of the classic modes known from other multiplayer first-person shooters.

Round team play

This mode corresponds to the team deathmatch . This is the simplest variant. The aim is to shoot all players on the opposing team. There is no other way to win a round.

Bank Robbery

In Bank Robbery (very similar to Capture the Flag ) there are two teams: “Lawmen” and “Outlaws”. While one team is tasked with stealing a sack of money from a safe or another hiding place, which is usually in the bank, and taking it to a prescribed place, the other team must try to prevent this. A team has either won if all team members from the opposing team are dead or if the money bag has been stolen and brought to the prescribed place. The tasks change when a team succeeds in winning the round by robbing a bank.

Duel

The duel is somewhat similar to Last Man Standing . At the beginning of the round, two combatants face each other. As long as the intro music is playing, you can neither shoot nor move. During this time it is possible to buy weapons, but only pistols are available. When the music ends, the pistols are in the holster , you can now draw and fire. If a player wins a duel, he receives a star and money. The winner remains in his position and fights the next duel there. The loser now has to wait until he can play another duel, possibly at a different position on the map. Whoever achieved five stars has won the round.

For this mode there are so-called "Duel Maps". These are divided into up to eight different locations, where duels can be played at the same time (this results in up to sixteen players per map).
