The medal for the battle near Eckernförde was donated on July 24, 1849 by Duke Adolph von Nassau and awarded to soldiers of the Nassau troop contingent who had taken part in the campaign as part of the conflict between Denmark and the German Confederation over the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein .

Among the significant share of the Nassau artillery, which consisted of a battery with six guns , the Danish ship of the line Christian VIII and the sailing frigate Gefion were unable to maneuver in the beach battle at Eckernförde on April 5, 1849 . Both ships had to surrender, with the Christian VIII exploding a little later and the Gefion being captured. The Nassau troops suffered no losses.

Appearance and wearing style

The round medal made of silver shows the portrait of the founder, turned to the right, with the inscription ADOLPH HERZOG ZU NASSAU . On the back you can see a sailing frigate floating on the water . All around MEINEN BRALDE KANONIEREN and under the representation of the ship the three-line inscription ECKERNFÖRDE 5 APRIL 1849 .

The award was worn on a dark blue ribbon on the left side of the chest.
