The Snap Lake Diamond Mine is located 220 km northeast of Yellowknife in the Canadian Northwest Territories . It is operated by De Beers , the largest diamond producer and dealer in the world. According to De Beers, it is their first all-diamond underground mine outside of Africa and the first in Canada.

Construction of the mine began with the opening of the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road ice road in winter 2005 and production started on January 16, 2008. On July 25, 2008 the mine officially opened. It should Template: future / in 5 yearsremain in operation for at least 20 years .

The annual output rose from 440,000 carats in 2009 and reached its highest level in 2010 at 926,000 carats. Production has been falling since then; In 2012, 870,000 carats were mined. [obsolete] At full production, 1.1 million tons and 1.5 million carats should be achieved annually .

The Snap Lake Mine was part of the documentary series Ice Road Truckers and the Discovery Channel report “Daily Planet Goes North - More Ice for the Arctic”. The ice road can be used 6 to 8 weeks a year to supply the mine with equipment. Outside of this time, the mine can only be reached by plane.
