Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road is a 568 km long ice road in the Northwest Territories and the Nunavut Territory in northern Canada . It is built annually for a period of around 60 days and 87% of it leads over frozen lakes. In addition to the total of 495 km of ice, the route also includes 64 land passages and is considered the longest ice road in the world. The line, first built in 1982, supplies the mines north of the city of Yellowknife with cargoes that cannot be transported by air.

The route got its name because it begins on Tibbitt Lake and ends at Contwoyto Lake .

In 2007 the route became the subject of the documentary series Ice Road Truckers . Since the owners of the track saw the Ice Road in a bad light, they banned commercial sound and video recordings for 2008.
