The Highway 2 , especially under the name of Hay River Highway known is the shortest numbered highway in the Northwest Territories .
It connects Hay River with the Mackenzie Highway in Enterprise . The entire length is 48 km and is completely paved . Approx. 6 km south of downtown Hay River, it crosses the Fort Smith Highway (Highway 5) .
The highway was originally a section of the Mackenzie Highway. However, it was renamed when the highway was extended northwest of Enterprise, first around Great Slave Lake to Yellowknife , then later in a westerly direction to Fort Simpson .
The highway is one of the most " rural " highways in the Northwest Territories.
