Dicrossus ( Gr .: “Di” = two; “krossos” = fringe, tip) is a genus of South American cichlids consisting of five species. The genus occurs in northern South America in the catchment area of the upper Rio Orinoco , the Rio Tapajós , the Rio Maués , the Rio Negro in Amazonia and the Río Atabapó in Colombia. The genus was described as early as 1875 by the Austrian zoologist Franz Steindachner ,but was synonymous with Crenicara in 1905 by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan . In 1990 the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander reversed this. Since then, the high-backed Crenicarids have been listed in the genus Crenicara , the slenderonesin Dicrossus .

features

Dicrossus species are 4 to 7 centimeters long and have a slender, elongated and laterally flattened body, a rounded snout and a slightly underneath mouth. Their chessboard-like pattern of spots on the sides of the body is characteristic, which is why they were given the German name chessboard cichlids.

External system

Dicrossus is closely related to the genera Biotodoma and Crenicara and forms with both the sub-tribus Crenicaratina. Both genera have their main distribution area in the rivers of the Andes east side.
