Fort Simpson ( Slavey : Liidli "confluence" or Líídlîî Køç - "where rivers flow together") is a settlement in the Dehcho region of the Canadian Northwest Territories . It is located on a river island at the confluence of the Mackenzie and Liard Rivers . Fort Simpson is named after the former head of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) George Simpson .
The present-day community developed from an original North West Company trading post , for which the rivers were important trade routes. This had the Fort of the Forks here in 1804 . The site was declared a National Historic Site of Canada on May 8, 1968 . The HBC then built their fort here in 1822.
Fort Simpson is one of the starting points for visitors to the Nahanni National Park Reserve .
