Snowy River is an American - Australian television series. It is set in Australia at the end of the 19th century . The main characters are Andrew Clarke as Matt McGregor and Wendy Hughes as Kathleen O'Neill.

Matt McGregor owns the Langara Ranch , near Paterson's Ridge, a small town not far from Melbourne . After the death of his wife, he had to look after his three children by himself. His eldest son Colin ( Brett Climo ) is the Reverend and helps out on the ranch, Rob ( Guy Pearce ) works with his father and Danni (Kristi Raymond, later Joelene Crnogorac), his only daughter, still goes to school.

Kathleen O'Neill is a widow. After losing her husband, she returns to Australia with her 12-year-old son Michael ( Ben Geurens ). She settles near Matt's ranch.

The Blackwoods are the other big landowners nearby and regularly give Matt and his family a hard time.

Matt McGregor notices a woman who has taken up residence with her son near his ranch. It is the widow and future teacher Kathleen O'Neill. Since Matt wanted to buy the land and Kathleen is very persistent, there are always disagreements. Another new resident in the area is Luke McGregor, the son of Matt's late brother. Matt wants to take Luke in and that he work for him. But Luke has already chosen Oliver Blackwood, Matt's greatest adversary, as his new employer. The new teacher in Paterson's Ridge is violent towards the children, including Danni. So Matt makes sure he gets fired. Since a new teacher is needed, Kathleen O'Neill takes the job.

Emily is also new. She and Colin immediately fall in love, but it takes some time for the two to become a couple. Meanwhile, Rob and Luke vie for Victoria Blackwood's favor. Since Luke is said to find gold later, Victoria believes he can make a good match and agrees to marry him. But her father knows that Luke is penniless and has high debts, he clears up his daughter and thus prevents the wedding. Victoria leaves the country disappointed. Luke is so desperate that he destroys his own mine and almost dies in the process. Matt eventually saves him. Luke, who has already made friends with Danni, then comes to Langara.

Matt wins the election of city chairman against Oliver, he will represent Patersons Ridge in the future. When he attends a meeting in Melbourne and Kathleen happens to be there too, he confesses his love to her. They both get married later and Kathleen becomes the editor of a small newspaper.

Victoria is coming back to Australia. Emily finds out that she is pregnant. But because of small complications, she goes to Melbourne with Colin. Kathleen and Michael are also on the train. The train is ambushed and Colin is shot. Everything turns out well as Michael can get help, but Emily loses the baby. Colin accidentally attracted the anger of a man who later burned down the church. Colin tries everything, but he can't stop the fire.

When Danni wants to take part in a horse race, Matt immediately forbids it because his wife was killed in an accident in such a race. Danni runs away, but returns later. She is angry with Matt because he wants to send her to a boarding school.

Kathleen's husband, who was believed to be dead, appears surprisingly again. Seamus wants Kathleen back, who moves out of Langara to organize her thoughts. Seamus suspects that he will lose Kathleen, he puts himself in danger. Kathleen takes care of him, but he realizes that he has lost her, her love belongs to Matt.

A boy suddenly appears in Paterson's Ridge, Josh has no parents and no home. Colin and Emily immediately take the boy to their hearts so that he stays with them and they adopt him. In the end you find out that Emily is pregnant again.
