Société d'Arcueil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Société d'Arcueil [ sɔ.sje.te daʁ.kœj ] was a French private scholarly society active between 1807 and 1813 , which met in the country houses of Claude Louis Berthollet and Pierre Simon Laplace in Arcueil, not far from Paris . Berthollet and Laplace were in close contact with Napoleon Bonaparte .

history

In the late summer of 1801, Berthollet bought a house in Arcueil. In the following years this developed into a place of knowledge exchange for young researchers, which Berthollet promoted and encouraged to turn to the natural sciences. Laplace moved into a neighboring house in 1806. Berthollet had previously accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte on his Egyptian campaign , Laplace was briefly interior minister under Napoleon in 1799. After Laplace's arrival in Arcueil, the previously only sporadic meetings took place more regularly. On July 9, 1807, the Société d'Arcueil was formally founded and the Mémoires de Physique et de Chimie, de la Société d'Arcueil founded. Few meetings took place between 1808 and 1810. In the years from 1811 to 1813, the Société d'Arcueil was again increasingly active. The defeat of Napoleon then probably led to the end of the private learned society.
