The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) is an American Trotskyist party that emerged from a current within the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) in the early 1960s . She stands in solidarity with the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI).
Tim Wohlforth and James Robertson, two leading SWP members, formed a direction within the party, the so-called "Revolutionary Tendency" (RT; German: revolutionary direction), for which they - first Robertson, later also Wohlforth - together with partisans from the SWP were excluded. During its brief existence, the RT maintained contacts with Gerry Healy's Socialist Labor League . After Wohlforth's exclusion, he and his supporters founded the American Committee of the Fourth International (AKVI), the American branch of the ICFI, in which Healy dominated strongly.
In the course of the 1960s, the AKVI was renamed the Workers League , and finally in 1996 the Socialist Equality Party. David North has been the chairman since 1976 .
The SEP maintains the World Socialist Web Site , an international socialist online publication that is read worldwide. Most recently she took part in the Californian recall elections in October 2003 and participated in the 2004 American presidential election with her own candidate. The German sister organization is called the Socialist Equality Party , the British , Canadian , Australian and Sri Lankan also have the name Socialist Equality Party .
