The Socialist Party of the USA (SPUSA, English Socialist Party USA ) is one of the heirs of the Socialist Party of America of Eugene Debs and Norman Thomas . It is a democratic-socialist party that advocates a broad democratic social revolution . Your youth organization is the Young People's Socialist League .
history
The party was founded in 1973 after the Socialist Party of America was taken over by supporters of Max Shachtman and renamed Social Democrats USA (SDUSA). An independent group, the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee (later Democratic Socialists of America [DSA]), also split off in 1973 and is also active in politics. All three organizations claim to be the true heirs of Eugene Debs and Norman Thomas . The DSA and SDUSA are linked to the Socialist International .
In 1980 it was SPUSA that became the first American party to nominate an avowed homosexual as a presidential candidate. It was anti-war activist David McReynolds . In 2000 he ran for the office of President a second time. In the last few years the number of members of the SPUSA increased from 600 to almost 1500. In a series of elections, the socialists caused a surprise. The most famous case occurred in 2000 in Milwaukee , where the socialist Wendell Harris received nearly 20% of the vote in the election for mayor. At the local level, the party was represented on the city council of Iowa City .
Program
The SPUSA describes itself as the only clear democratic-socialist party in the United States . It is equally against communism based on the Soviet model and against capitalism .
The party rejects the application of democratic centralism , which means that its members have the freedom to publicly oppose party politics. Membership in the party is based on fees paid by applicants who agree to the party’s set of principles. The party regards itself as democratic-socialist, although there are different views among its members on how socialism can be achieved.
Some SPUSA members advocate a developmental approach to socialism by welcoming a period of social democratic transition. They lead the social democratic systems of nations like Sweden . Others consider Swedish social democracy to be highly capitalist, which is why they prefer a more radical and revolutionary transformation of society from capitalism to socialism.
The party operates a “socialist feminism”, arranges numerous pro-choice activities and stands for gender equality among its functionaries. The party program regards abortion as an individual right of women to health. There is an active women's commission in the party that publishes a quarterly bulletin, Socialist Women .
SPUSA focuses on national politics. This includes campaigns to abolish the military-industrial complex and enforce civil rights .
