Max Shachtman
Max Shachtman (born September 10, 1904 in Warsaw , † November 4, 1972 in Floral Park , New York ) was an American Marxist theorist and later an anti-Soviet Social Democrat .
Political career
Shachtman, who was born in Warsaw, emigrated to New York City with his family in 1905 . At first he was a Leninist and a Trotskyist . In 1927, after being expelled from the Communist Party of the USA , he formed the Communist League of America with James P. Cannon , with whom he fell out around 1939, and Martin Abern . After that he also belonged to the Socialist Workers Party . Eventually he developed into an anti-Soviet social democrat. He developed a Marxist theory often called "Shachtmanism". His work, as part of the "Old Left", influenced the development of neoconservatism .
