Software-on-Demand ( dt. Software on Demand , On-Demand Software ) is a service in which the customer has certain software operated by the provider, who also scales it according to the request ( on-demand ). This allows flexible forms of licensing that can be billed according to data volume, number of users or the like.

In contrast to the in-house software solution with the usual sales contract , software on demand is not operated by the user , but on the servers of the software provider, the application service provider . The user usually accesses it via a public computer network .

This enables the user of such an application to have worldwide access to his mostly browser-based software solution (only a web browser and Internet access are required to use the software).

On-demand solutions are primarily aimed at small and medium-sized companies that have to do with low implementation and operating costs, because there are no high purchase investments when licensing the software and hardware (server), as these are with the provider (host). In addition, the service in general ( updates , hotline ) is included in the rental price .

Another advantage is the timely implementation in ongoing operations, as often no special adjustments are made to the existing IT infrastructure.

The CRM software provider Salesforce.com was a pioneer in this new form of software delivery. What began as a niche market is now also a topic for many software manufacturers. The service is also offered for enterprise resource planning or office software.
