Sogn (Norway)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A "Sogn" (norw. Bokmål et sogn ) or Sokn (norw. Nynorsk ince Sokn ), neuter is, in the Norwegian Church (Den norske kirke) the national language name for a church or a parish .

A Sogn is the lowest ecclesiastical organizational unit, but it can also include several church buildings. One or more Sogne formed a " Prestegjeld ", the next higher administrative unit of the Norwegian Church at that time. Since 2004, the prestegjeld has been abolished as an administrative unit of the Norwegian Church.

Each Sogn has its own local council (Bokmål: menighetsråd , Nynorsk: sokneråd ). That is why a Sogn also plays a role in the council structure of the Norwegian Church. If there are several Sogne within a Norwegian municipality , administrative tasks are taken over by the community council (norw. Fellesrådet ), which is composed of representatives from the local councils. If there is only one Sogn in a municipality, menighetsråd and fellesråd correspond .

In 2010 there were 1275 Sogns in Norway.
