Solaster stimpsoni is a type of sun star from the order of the valve stars (Valvatida), which iswidespreadin the North Pacific . It is one of the largest starfish.

Solaster stimpsoni

Solaster stimpsoni reaches a diameter of up to 50 cm and has 8 to 12, usually 10 arms. The upper side is colored reddish orange and covered with thick paxilles (umbrella-like platelets). The arms are long, thin, pointed, and each has a dark, purple-gray stripe that runs from the center of the body to the tip of the arm. Pedicellariums are absent. The underside of the arms has two rows of suction cups .

Distribution and occurrence

Solaster stimpsoni lives on the coasts of Japan and along the North American Pacific coast from Alaska to Central California on rocky surfaces from the tidal zone to depths of about 610 m.

Solaster stimpsoni eats various smaller sea ​​cucumbers , including Cucumaria miniata , Cucumaria curata , Eupentacta quinquesemita , Eupentacta pseudoquinquesemita, and Psolus chitonoides . It also feeds on arm pods , sea ​​squirts and sea ​​feathers .
