Solo is an American short mountain film directed by Mike Hoover in 1972.

action

The film shows Mike Hoover climbing a mountain solo. During the ascent along a waterfall, Hoover finds a frog in a crevice, which he takes. The ascent proves to be difficult, especially on overhangs, so suddenly a rock hook that has been hit loosens and Mike Hoover falls a little down and hits the rock. His nose is bleeding, but he hasn't otherwise injured himself. Finally, after climbing through snow and ice, it reaches the mountain summit. He lets the view of the valley sink in and finally rappels down again. Back in the valley, he releases the frog in a stream.

production

Solo was the first film project by mountaineer Mike Hoover. In the 1973 making-of Solo - Behind the Scenes accompanying the film , Hoover reported on the shooting. For the film, he climbed his favorite spots; the scenes were eventually cut together to make a single ascent. The fall Hoovers, which was integrated into the film and had to be shot three times, caused particular difficulties. In the successful third shot, however, Hoover lost his red knitted hat, so an extra scene had to be inserted and filmed in which Hoover retrieves the hat from a distant rock.

The film was released in 1972. It was part of the compilation film Shhh from 1975. In 2007, the film was released on DVD with the making of Solo - Behind the Scenes .

Awards

Solo was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Short Film in 1973 .
