Sologamy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sologamy (from ancient Greek σόλο sólo "alone" and γάμος gamos "marriage", German  "unity" ) is marriage with oneself. Proponents of the practice argue that it reinforces one's own worth and leads to a happier life. Critics claim that it is a narcissistic practice that suggests low self-esteem.

An alternative term is self-marriage . However, this can refer to a self-union marriage , which is an unofficial marriage.

The ceremony

The ceremonies can take almost exactly the same form as those of a regular marriage, including guests, cake, and reception. Some self-marriage programs include pre-marriage guidance, practice, and support.

popularity

Sologamy has become increasingly popular in the 21st century, especially among wealthy women. As of 2014, a travel agency in Kyoto was offering packages for women to marry themselves, with some clients being wives who were dissatisfied with their original wedding. The self-marriage of British photographer Grace Gelder in 2014 and the self-marriage of Italian fitness trainer Laura Mesi in 2017 are common.

Fictional examples

Several television series feature characters who have married themselves. These include Sue Sylvester in Glee , Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City , Holly Franklin in Season 4 of The Exes , a middle-aged man in Jam, and the devil in the episode "Comet!" In Cow and Chicken .

In the film Zoolander 2 , the transgender model All (played by Benedict Cumberbatch ) is married to herself because it is said that "self-marriage is finally legal in Italy".
