Solosolo is a village on the northeast coast of Upolu in the island state of Samoa . The village is located in the political district (itūmālō) Atua and is one of the most important settlements with the largest population in the constituency of Anoama'a West .

geography

The village lies on a headland bounded by Vainamo Bay with the mouth of the Namo River in the west and the Mulivai River in the east. The Tuafalelola flows into the sea at the eastern edge of the settlement area . The settlement has meanwhile pushed itself quite far into the hinterland with the plantations in the hills above Vainamo. Oberdorf and Unterdorf are separated by the Main East Coast Road , which connects to Apia , the island's main town in the west. However, the main settlement ( malae ) is still on the headland. Festivals and sporting events are held there. The malae is bordered in the west by a Congregational Christian Church and in the east by a Catholic church. More recently, other Christian denominations have also gained a foothold in the village, including Methodists , Nazarenes , Assembly of God and Latter Day Saints .

The primary school is inland from Solosolo.

administration

The Village Council maota fono is at the intersection between Oberdorf and headland . There the chiefs of the families meet to discuss political, social and economic issues in the village. The voting is regulated by the faalupega (customs / genealogy) of Solosolo: Faalupega o Solosolo Afio le paia o le Taofia o Malietoa Taulapapa ma le latou tama, Tupo-le-Sava, Afio maia le paia o le Usoalii ma e na 'au i Ao, Maliu maia le mamalu o Saleutogipo'e, o le limamatua o Faleupolu tofiga

mythology

The cannibal Maniloa lived in Solosolo and was slain by the young man Polo-leu-ligana .

environmental Protection

Due to the frequency of storms and the mountainous geography of the area, Solosolo is sensitive to natural disasters. Therefore the government built a breakwater in 2006 to protect Vainamo Bay and the east coast road, as well as the bridge over the Namo River.

tourism

The bay is a popular surfing area, even if the surf at the top of the reef is dangerous for inexperienced surfers. A popular spot is at Plum Pudding Rock .
