The port of Solva

Solva ( Welsh Solfach ) is a place on the north side of St Brides Bay in the county of Pembrokeshire in south Wales .

Solva lies at the deeply dug estuary of the River Solva. The district of Lower Solva consists mainly of a long road that ends at the small harbor. Recent developments mainly affect the Upper Solva district above the port on the west side of the valley cut.

In the Middle Ages, Solva on St Brides Bay was the main trading center. Another important source of income was lime burning . A few lime kilns from this period are still preserved in the port area.

In the nineteenth century there were about 30 registered merchant ships in Solva. Over time, however, sea trade was replaced by tourism; the harbor is now a popular boating hub. The local cliff is popular with hikers, and the Cambrian coastal formations are interesting for both amateur and professional geologists.

tradition

Every year on Easter Monday, Solva hosts a charity duck race. Residents and tourists alike have the opportunity to get a twentieth part of a duck for around £ 1. The ducks are then released at the Middle Mill and swim with the current down the Solva River to the harbor. The duck who was the first to swim under the footbridge in Lower Solva won.

Famous pepole

David Gray , a very successful musician, spent most of his childhood in Solva.
