Somaliland (disambiguation)
Somaliland ( Somali Soomaaliland ) stands for:
- historically in Germanic languages the entire area in the Horn of Africa inhabited by Somali
- Somaliland , the de facto independent northern part of Somalia
In the colonial era, the following colonial areas were designated:
- Abyssinian or Ethiopian Somaliland , which has been an Ethiopian region since 1897 or 1950, see Ogaden and Somali (region)
-
British Somaliland , the north of what is now Somalia or Somaliland
- partly also the north-east of Kenya, inhabited by Somali
- French Somaliland , today's Djibouti
- Italian Somaliland , the south and east of what is now Somalia
- At the time of the beginning colonization, the entire east coast of Africa , under the sovereignty of Zanzibar , was called Somaliland; therefore, names like “Portuguese Somaliland” (for today's Mozambique ), “Russian Somaliland” (for a brief colonization attempt in Sagallo ) and “German Somaliland” (for today's Tanzania or German Somali coast ) came up. The name "Portuguese Somaliland" comes from the 16th and 17th centuries, when Portugal actually controlled the entire East African coast from Somalia in the north to Mozambique in the south.
