At the time Jackson recorded the song, she had recently split from longtime husband René Elizondo, Jr., nearly 10 years after they got married. Someone to Call My Lover and several other songs from the All for You album deal with Jackson's breakup and getting used to being single as main themes.

The So So Def remix of the song was Jackson's first collaboration with Jermaine Dupri . The single was again a top ten hit for Janet in the US and reached number 3. Jackson was also nominated for a Grammy in the category "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" at the Grammy Awards 2002 , but lost to Nelly Furtados I'm like a bird .

Jackson only sang the song on her All for You tour. To date, Someone to Call My Lover is Janet Jackson's last song to hit the top ten on the American Billboard Hot 100 .

The music video was directed by Francis Lawrence . In the music video, Jackson drives to a bar. She goes into the bar, and there she starts singing the song and dancing. Jackson also dances on a children's car device. A music video for the So So Def Remix has also been released, including alternative scenes with Dupri.

The original music video was also released on a very limited bonus DVD edition of the album All for You , while the music video for the So So Def Remix 2004 was released on Janet's video compilation From janet. to Damita Jo: The Videos appeared.
