Participants in the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) led by the Australian polar explorer John Rymill mapped it for the first time. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named him in 1959 after Henri Somers (1863-1937), chief machinist on the Belgica expedition (1897-1899) of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery .
