The summer casino in Basel

The summer casino is a former society house from the 19th century and today a center for young culture in the city of Basel . It is located in the St. Alban district .

The summer casino was built around 1822 on a private initiative outside the city walls for those citizens who retired to their country estates during the summer. At the same time, today's city casino was built in the city center on Barfüsserplatz . During the unrest surrounding the separation of the cantons in Basel between 1830 and 1833, the members of the summer casino temporarily moved to the city casino; As the summer casino company became increasingly indebted in the following decades while the city casino flourished, the two companies were finally merged in 1907. However, the immense debt burden from the summer casino could not be managed, and so the summer casino and park were sold in 1937.

In 1959, the Jugendhaus Foundation took over the building and converted it into a youth center in the following decades. The summer casino has been the largest youth culture center in the Basel region since 1986. Today it is an integral part of regional youth culture. Until 2015, the sponsorship was the youth work Basel (JuAr), formerly the association Basler Freizeitaktion BFA. The summer casino has been run by the Junge Kultur Basel association since January 2016.

The house is used for concerts and parties. Many rooms are also rented to youth cultural workers in the region. Characteristic of the building are the graffiti , which are spread over the entire facade and are renewed at regular intervals.
