Roy Tucker

Roy A. Tucker (* 1951 , in Jackson (Mississippi) , USA ) is an American astronomer . He is considered an outstanding discoverer of asteroids . Between 1996 and 2019 he identified and co-discovered over 700 celestial bodies - mostly asteroids.

Live and act

Tucker grew up in Memphis, Tennessee . Since 1966 he has been a member of the Memphis Astronomical Society . He holds a Masters degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He currently works as an engineer in the Imaging Technology Laboratory at the University of Arizona.

In 1999, an asteroid discovered by Paul G. Comba in 1997 was named (10914) Tucker in his honor. In 2002, Tucker became one of five scientists to be awarded the Gene Shoemaker Near Earth Object Grant . His most important discovery is the co-discovery of the asteroid (99942) Apophis - this was previously better known under its provisional name 2004 MN 4 - together with David J. Tholen and Fabrizio Bernardi from the University of Hawaii. The asteroid will come very close to Earth on April 13, 2029. He was also involved in the discovery of two comets 328P / LONEOS – Tucker and C / 2004 Q1, from the Jupiter family .
