The summer night festival is a festive event in the Hermitage in Bayreuth .

The festival has its origin in a festival of the Margraves of Bayreuth . Their court society played the life of a hermit order here in their original hermitage and also invited the common people to a kind of folk festival.

The modern summer night festival has existed since August 1970, organized by the University Association of the City of Bayreuth , which had 1154 members at the time . Originally it took place in the entire park, but for some years the operation has been limited to the immediate vicinity of the castle for financial reasons. The once popular Lower Grotto is therefore no longer accessible during the festival. Today there is a neat party atmosphere with several music stages. In contrast, the cultural program that existed in earlier years and was adapted to the environment was reduced.

The event starts at 5 p.m. and ends at 3 a.m. A large fireworks display traditionally takes place around 11 p.m. After the festival had been canceled in recent years due to the risk of storms, it was held in 2011 despite very cool weather and rain. The losses incurred (50,000 - 60,000 euros) due to the low number of visitors (only around 3000 people) were borne by the city of Bayreuth.
