Somnoendoscopy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Somnoendoskopie (synonyms: propofol Somnoendoskopie, sleep endoscopy, sleep video endoscopy; latin somnus, sleep '; Greek ENDON, inside' skopein observe ') is an endoscopy for the precise localization of the origin of the snoring sounds when habitual snoring in artificial sleep.

method

You go with a thin flexible endoscope (nasopharyngoscope) over the nose into the nasopharynx . The patient usually receives the hypnotic propofol , which induces artificial sleep.

scope of application

As a rule, the patient begins to snore during the examination and one can observe via the endoscope which mechanism is behind the snoring. The exact location of the vibrations of the mucous membrane and soft tissue structures as well as occlusions (constrictions) can thus be localized. You can also test whether an Esmarch handle (in which the lower jaw is raised) helps to change snoring. Thus the success of a progenizing bite splint ( protrusion splint ) can be assessed . Overall, the procedure serves to find the right (surgical) method to reduce snoring. The examination is safe and not painful. Complications are extremely rare.
