Son of Sam is an American horror punk and death rock music group that was founded as a side project by Todd Youth. The name of the band is based on the serial killer David Berkowitz , who used this name.

history

In 2000, Todd Youth founded the music group Son of Sam in Los Angeles . Youth, then a guitarist with the band Danzig and previously a member of Samhain , founded this supergroup together with other members of these two bands. The singer was Davey Havok from the popular alternative rock band AFI , who was also responsible for numerous lyrics.

Todd Youth, who was asked by Glenn Danzig to play guitar on the 1999 Samhain reunion tour , was inspired by this tour to form a band based on the old musical style of Samhain . Therefore Son of Sam offers horror punk with influences from death rock and heavy metal.

The debut album Songs from the Earth was recorded quickly and released in 2001 on Nitro Records . Glenn Danzig himself took part in two songs. Nevertheless, the project was then dormant again for years. It wasn't until the end of 2007 that the group got back together to work on a new album. Although he initially showed interest, Davey Havok did not return to the band because his main group tied him too much. The second album Into the Night was finally released in 2008, this time with singer Ian Thorne at the microphone.

Band founder Schofield passed away in October 2018.

style

Joachim Hiller from the music magazine Ox praises the debut album as a "dark, powerful, punchy album between Samhain bombast and drama, as well as the horror punk of the Misfits" . He also adds that, in his opinion, the album "can and should be understood as an extended middle finger in the face of the puppet troupe that is roaming the country under the name Misfits these days" .
