Ostbevern-Schirlheide special ammunition depot

The special ammunition depot Ostbevern-Schirlheide , also called supply depot ammunition (VLM) Ostbevern , was located in the Schirlheide forest in Ostbevern 16 kilometers northeast of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was maintained from 1964 to 1991.

The 583rd Ordnance Company in Münster-Handorf of the US Army operated together with the 8 Art Sup Regt RCT in Münster-Coerde of the British Army the facility with nine underground ammunition warehouses. They contained nuclear warheads for the short-range missiles Honest John and Lance and nuclear projectiles for self-propelled howitzers. The transports took place by Boeing-Vertol CH-47 transport helicopter ("Chinook").
