Schirlheide

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schirlheide is a forest and heather area in the border region between Ostbevern and Telgte . The Osterwald lies within the Schirlheide.

history

The name comes from the Schirl community , which comes from "sheer loh". “Schier loh” means almost in the sense of “only” or “exclusively” and “tan” means low, swampy, damp. Today the area is dry and overgrown with pine trees. It is the second largest forest area in Ostbevern. A relatively small area of the area is designated as a nature reserve Schirlheide .

From 1964 to 1991 the 583rd Ordnance Company ( Münster-Handorf ) of the US Army together with the 8 Art Sup Regt RCT ( Münster-Coerde ) of the British Army operated the VLM Ostbevern (ammunition supply depot) with nine underground ammunition warehouses for stockpiling and delivery of several smaller special ammunition dumps with nuclear warheads by Boeing-Vertol CH-47 ("Chinook") transport helicopter.
