The Schirlheide nature reserve is located in the Warendorf district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The approximately 6.6 hectare area, which was placed under nature conservation in 2011 , extends southeast of the core town of Ostbevern . It is named after the forest and heather area of the same name .

The protection takes place

for the maintenance and development of heather areas in complex with heather ponds

for the preservation, development and restoration of a cultural landscape relic that was once typical of the region

for the maintenance and development of typical heath plant communities

to protect the existing small bodies of water with particular importance for amphibians , reptiles and dragonflies

Due to the importance of the Schirlheide as an important artery in the biotope network for flora and fauna as well as a retreat for numerous heather and poor location-typical animal and plant species

because of the presence of soils worthy of protection.
