Setup date 2011

The Schirlheide nature reserve is located in the Warendorf district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The approximately 6.6  hectare area, which was placed under nature conservation in 2011 , extends southeast of the core town of Ostbevern . It is named after the forest and heather area of the same name .

The protection takes place

  • for the maintenance and development of heather areas in complex with heather ponds
  • for the preservation, development and restoration of a cultural landscape relic that was once typical of the region
  • for the maintenance and development of typical heath plant communities
  • to protect the existing small bodies of water with particular importance for amphibians , reptiles and dragonflies
  • Due to the importance of the Schirlheide as an important artery in the biotope network for flora and fauna as well as a retreat for numerous heather and poor location-typical animal and plant species
  • because of the presence of soils worthy of protection.
