The Füchtorfer Moor is a 187 hectare nature reserve near Füchtorf in the area of the town of Sassenberg in the Warendorf district . It consists of three partial areas and has the identifier WAF-007.

location

The moorland is located in Ostmünsterland between the Bever in the north and the Hessel in the south. This is why the villages of Füchtorf, Peckeloh , Sassenberg and Milte are located . Not far from the moor is the border to Glandorf and thus the state border with Lower Saxony .

history

According to the mapping from 1893 to 1895, the area totaled 312 hectares of contiguous moorland. The Füchtorfer Moor was one of the largest lowland moors in Westphalia. Numerous finds from the Bronze Age and barrows suggest an early settlement. In 1844 a skeleton of an aurochs was found there, which is exhibited today in the Geological-Paleontological Museum in Münster . In 1986 another auroch skeleton was found about 3.5 km from the first site. In the 1960s and 1970s, drainage and land consolidation significantly reduced the peatland area. On August 24, 2007, the area was designated as a nature reserve.
