The Torfvenn is a nature reserve in the Warendorf district . It has a size of approximately 1.38 hectares.
The protected area, which is framed on all sides by agriculturally used areas, is located 3 km west of Warendorf in the Neuwarendorf district between the B 64 (August-Wessing-Damm) and district road 3. It consists primarily of a tree and shrubbery Heather pond that used to contain nutrient-poor water. A poplar grove borders the water in the east.
At the beginning of the 1960s, larger stocks of narrow-leaved cotton grass ( Eriophorum angustifolium ) and blackberry ( Vaccinium uliginosum ) were growing on its edge .
The floristic features used to include the thread sedge , the mean sundew ( Drosera intermedia ) and the swamp hard hay ( Hypericum elodes ). Towards the end of the 1950s, the round-leaved sundew ( Drosera rotundifolia ) appeared in thousands of specimens, of the rare marsh bear moss ( Lycopodiella inundata ) around 200 plants.
Since nutrient-rich water was channeled into the pond from the adjacent usable areas, plant species adapted to the medium nutrient content could settle in the course of time, including swamp blood-eye ( Potentilla palustris ), pennywort ( Hydrocotyle vulgaris ), swamp hairline and swamp violet ( Viola palustris ) .
Today the area is completely eutrophic and has no more rare plant species apart from the king fern ( Osmunda regalis ). Dominating eutraphente species such as yellow iris ( Iris pseudacorus ), bittersweet nightshade ( Solanum dulcamara ), pipe-canary grass ( Phalaris arundinacea ), Shore Wolfstrapp ( Lycopus europaeus ).
The common snipe used to be one of the breeding birds . The tree pipit , which was represented by 5 breeding pairs, was considered a character bird .
