Fritz Runge (botanist)

Fritz Runge (born October 13, 1911 in Bocholt ; † June 23, 2000 in Hennef ) was a German botanist and conservationist who was mainly active in Westphalia . He made a name for himself through numerous scientific publications.

Live and act

Runge grew up in Münster, where he first attended elementary school and then high school. He then studied in Münster and Berlin. In 1939 he received his doctorate from the Wilhelms University in Münster on the forest communities of the inner Munster Bay. From 1950 he worked as a specialist at the State Museum for Natural History in Münster, to which he remained connected even after his retirement.

His most important publications include Flora Westfalens , which he created and which has appeared in four editions since 1955, as well as the work on The Plant Societies of Westphalia , conceived as an excursion pocket book , which was later considerably expanded and finally covered the entire Central European region. It appeared in a total of 13 editions. He reached a wide audience with his popular science book on The Nature Conservation Areas of Westphalia , which, first published in 1955, was published in 1982 in its fourth edition. To date, it has remained the only work that has a complete overview of all the time protected natural areas of this tract of land provided. Therefore, it still offers valuable information today.

The native Westphalian also dealt with floristic studies on numerous vacations and published numerous guides on the nature of several North Sea islands (including Baltrum , Borkum , Helgoland , Langeoog , Wangerooge ), which were very popular with holidaymakers and appeared in numerous editions.

From 1950 to 1976, Fritz Runge also headed the Natural History and Nature Conservation department in the Westphalian Heimatbund. It is thanks to his commitment that the Bleikuhlen nature reserve near Blankenrode , threatened by the construction of the motorway, was preserved.

Fritz Runge had been married to the mushroom expert Annemarie Runge (1922–1994) since 1946 .
