The Geisterholz nature reserve is located in the Warendorf district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The approximately 299 hectare area, which was placed under nature protection in 2003 , extends between the western core town of Ennigerloh and the eastern core town Oelde . Directly on the south edge extending country road L L 792 and directly on the northeastern edge 793. Further away south extends the A 2 .

The protection takes place

  • for the preservation, promotion, development and restoration of communities and habitats typical of the landscape, rare and endangered animal and plant species in a large, nationally significant forest complex with well-developed star chickweed - common oak - hornbeam forests and woodruff beech forests in their typical local variation, including their pre-forests, Shrubbery and herbaceous vegetation as well as their forest edges
  • for scientific, natural history, geographical and geological reasons and because of the biogeographical importance
  • because of the rarity, peculiarity and the outstanding beauty of the area
  • to secure the natural balance and to ward off harmful effects and negative changes in ecological relationships
  • as part of a biotope network of national and European importance
  • to preserve and restore a favorable state of conservation of natural habitats and wild animal and plant species of community interest
