Song Thanh Conservation Area

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With an area of about 2000 km², Song Thanh is one of the largest nature reserves in Vietnam .

Topography and hydrology

The sanctuary is located in the Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam. For the most part, the area consists of mountains that sometimes reach altitudes of over 1000 meters. The highest point is in the south and faces the Kon Tum Plateau.

The Dak Pring and Tam Paete rivers drain the western catchment area , which then flow eastward and merge to form the Boung River . The south and east of the reserve are drained by the Giang River , which is a tributary of the Cai River . The Boung and Cai rivers later flow together to form the Vu Gia River , one of the largest river systems in Quang Nam Province.

Flora and fauna

So far, 831 vascular plant species are known in the area , 23 of which are only found in Vietnam.

According to ANON, 53 mammal , 44 reptile and 21 amphibian species of vertebrates are found in Song Thanh. However, these data are based in part on assumptions that should be treated with caution. Among the suspected animal species is u. a. also the Indochinese tiger .

Danger

Due to the illegal extraction of firewood , deforestation , gold mining , shifting cultivation and hunting considerable pressure exerted on the reserve. The main reason here is the rural poverty of the suburban population, which leads to a high level of dependence on natural resources. Mainly ethnic minorities of the Ka Tu , Gie-trieng and Mnong live in the area , who belong to the poorest population groups in Vietnam . In the west of the area the Ho Chi Minh expressway is currently being built in order to relieve the congested National Road 1 in the east . This is likely to lead to further pollution and thus a deterioration of the protected area, caused by population immigration, settlement expansion and further destruction and fragmentation of the area.
