The magazine has existed since 1976 and was initially the newsletter of the German Society for Solar Energy until a split occurred in 1979. Since 1979 the organ of the "German Society for Solar Energy" has been called Solar Energy and the new sheet of solar energy & heat technology that has been split off from the association . In 1982 the magazines Bau & Energie and Energie went decentralized into this magazine. Until the end of 1999 the title was "Solar Energy & Heating Technology". At first it appeared every two months, now 10 times a year. In 2003 an international offshoot called "Sun & Wind Energy" was founded. This was initially published once a year; it now appears six times a year.
